The Pender Ventures Way

Our vision is to invest based on fundamental principles: value creation, unit economics and large market opportunities. Our mission is to build alignment, transparency and focus in everything we do.

Our Company Thesis

Validated

Clear signs of product-market fit reflected in meaningful and repeatable revenue and at least one established go-to-market channel.

Impactful

A useful product that positively impacts the customers and stakeholders it serves while effectively managing long-term societal risks.

Resilient

Strong unit economics and proven ability to grow efficiently coupled with excellent leadership and a viable path to long-term profitability.

Scalable

A company operating in a sizable market with a product and business model that can be expanded rapidly with additional resources.

Diverse

More than 40% of Pender’s portfolio CEOs are women or BIPOC. We strive to continue to deliver best-in-class performance in this area.

Our investment approach

We are thesis-driven investors who concentrate on company fundamentals, not flavours-du-jour. While we are stage-agnostic, our sweet spot is typically Series A. We prefer to lead priced rounds but will also join syndicates and are open to providing primary or secondary capital. We mainly work with Canadian companies but can invest across North America.

Our health tech thesis

Better software for a healthier society

The health care industry is vitally important to our society. At 15% of GDP in North America, it’s also a significant driver of economic activity. Over the past 50 years, software has profoundly changed the way health care is delivered. But while advances have been made, a massive opportunity remains to facilitate interoperability, enhance user experience and bring the power of data-driven predictions and decision-making to every aspect of health care value chain. For more on our view on the health tech market, check out our 2022 health tech funding report and market map.

Our software thesis

Best-in-class tools for well-defined users

We believe that software companies will continue to drive the innovation economy, as legacy systems are replaced with modern tools that prioritize integration, user experience and the intelligent use of data. As software investors, we focus on finding companies with high ROI solutions that have proven their ability to increase revenue, reduce costs and/or improve outcomes.
